As the art historian and journalist Sally Grant wrote in 2017, much of the imagery for Thiebaud's landscapes is drawn from artist's home in California, but the works are less literal depictions of landscape than explorations of the experience of the place. Thiebaud has indeed recently said: "they're all painted from memory."
